The pic of Joan is grainy, washed out, giving the kitten an ethereal lightness, an insubstantial quality; the story of sick little Joan evokes our sympathy and, like the image, we see her fading away,slowly disappearing. Interesting appeal to irony by pointing to the link between her name and her destiny.
